Abstract

An indirect complexometric method has been described for rapid and accurate estimation of phosphate in ceramics and related materials such as opal glass, bone china, bone ash, rock pnosphate etc. Phosphate is precipitated as zirconyl phosphate with a known quantity of Zr (IV) and the excess of Zr (IV) is back titrated with EDTA in IN nitric acid. Except fluorine, other elements do not interfere. Procedure for complete removal of fluorine, if present or introduced during opening of the sample, has also been described. The time taken for the estimation ranges from 1½ hrs to 3½ hrs depending on the nature of sample.
