ABSTRACT
The theme of the address focuses on preserving the identity of Geography as the discipline to understand everyday life. Routes taken in research and teaching are based on the discipline's historical roots, its perspectives, philosophy and methodology. The skills of its practitioners can effect change as geographers participate in producing knowledge relevant to environment and society. Particular reference is made to present day South Africa and to the significance of a sense of place and a sense of time in the interpretation of geographical realities. Accommodation of developments in the field of technology and the acquisition and use of information are acknowledged in an era of increasing globalisation and interdependence.
