Abstract

§ 1. One of the most persistent problems of Germanic historical phonology is the question of the origins of the so-called *ē 2, i.e. the sound that represents a long ē different from original Gmc. *ē, sometimes termed *ē 1 (from I.-E. *ē), as seen by the divergent development of these sounds in West and North Germanic.
