The Glen Artney Juniper Wood

Summary

A large stand of juniper in Glen Artney, Perthshire is described. The population has apparently regenerated over many years and has expanded greatly since the end of the last century primarily due to fortuitous changes of grazing pressure. It is not immediately endangered although seedlings are now rare because of grazing. There are about 33000 mature individuals, with girths up to 102cm. There is a predominance of females in the smaller size classes and males in the larger. Overall there is a sex ratio (amongst plants of whichthe sex could be determined) of 1:1.11, female:male. Growth ring counts were made on fifty cut stems and the oldest measured individual was 102 years.
