Integrating women into rural development in Africa by participatory research

Pages 127-133 | Received 01 Jun 1994, Accepted 01 Jan 1995, Published online: 27 Feb 2008

Abstract

The traditional belief system in Africa, which regards women as appendages to men, has not given women the opportunity of contributing meaningfully to development. Development is not something to be imposed from without, but rather must involve the active participation of all for it to be effective. Participatory research ‐ or non‐formal educational ‐ methods can help to remove prejudice against women and accelerate their integration into the development process.
