This research note offers selected results from an empirical investigation into holidaying patterns among black2 residents of the Transkei subregion. Until recently, tourism centred on the interests of whites, about which much is known. Little information is available, however, about the leisure patterns of South Africa's black population. With the removal of racial restrictions and due to rising incomes, tourism among blacks is expected to grow. If their needs prove to differ from those of white tourists, changes may be required in the type of accommodation, food and entertainment The survey investigated tourist patterns among black middle‐ and upper‐income earners in the Transkei in 1994, Although Transkeians are not representative of all black tourists, they are similar to their counterparts in the rest of South Africa.
