The development of a health information system

In order to redress the inequities in the health care system inherited from the apartheid era, a comprehensive database on health should be developed under the National Health Plan. Important policy decisions about the scope, content, control and use of such an information system will be required at all levels of government and in the private sector. The availability of factual information about users and providers should make it possible to improve the quality of health care, to set priorities in the delivery of care and to minimise the costs.
