Teleprinter Code for the Hindi Alphabets

Pages 235-241 | Published online: 21 Aug 2015

Abstract

In this paper the author has proposed a 5-unit teleprinter code for the Hindi alphabets. A study has been made regarding the frequency of occurrence of Hindi alphabets in the language. A new symbol has been coined, by means of which all the Hindi words can be written with the help of eight matras and only twenty-three letters. With this code the existing English teleprinter transmitter can be used to transmit a message in Hindi, and the existing receiver will require minor modifications to print the message in Hindi. The author has also made an alternative suggestion of transmitting and printing by a three-shift system, in which all the existing Hindi alphabets can be represented on the keyboard, still operating on a 5-unit code basis.
