Abstract
The characteristic equations for the E0, H0 and EH waves along a solid conductor embedded in three coaxial dielectrics are presented. The values of the propagation constant obtained by a graphical solution of the characteristic equations show that (i) out of the two symmetrical waves E01 and H01, it is only the former which can be propagated; (ii) it is not possible to transmit the asymmetric wave EH, along a conductor embedded in free space. It has been shown that the transcendental characteristic equations for E0 and H0 waves along a (i) dielectric rod, (ii) dielectric tube and (iii) solid conductor immersed in free space are nothing but special cases of the general equations.
