A Proposed Ferrite-Tuned Magnetron

Abstract

General considerations are given for tuning a magnetron by suitably placing a ferrite material in the resonator and varying its effective permeability by means of a biasing magnetic field.

It is shown that an inverted interdigital magnetron with a coaxial line coupled to the region enclosed by the fingers is well suited for this purpose. The ferrite can be placed near the shorted end of the line and can be biased by a radial field. The ferrite material thus located can be kept out of the main magnetic field of the magnetron; so that the interference of one with the other is avoided.

An approximate analysis for the resonance frequency of this device, as a function of biasing magnetic field, is given. A tuning curve obtained on this basis is presented.
