&
Pages 421-436 | Published online: 21 Aug 2015

ABSTRACT

The article gives detailed noise measurements conducted in the plenary hall of Vigyan Bhavan as also in the auditorium of A.I.R., New Delhi. The measurements cover full range of ambient noise level starting from ‘complete shut down’ to full operation of all equipments and lights through 5 or 6 stages. The noise measurement in each case has been analysed over 8 octave bands covering a range of 20–10,000 cycles per second. The noise figures obtained have been compared with the noise criteria curves recommended by Leo Beranek1 for large conferences and concert halls. Ways and means to reduce the noise level have been discussed in light of the requirements of different types of programmes conducted in these halls.
