Height of Occurrence of Shower Meteors

Pages 467-470 | Received 12 Dec 1962, Published online: 21 Aug 2015

ABSTRACT

The paper describes a method for the determination of the heights of occurrence (H) of shower meteors, using range-time records of them, obtained from any meteor radar system. The method involves an assumption that the different meteors from a single shower produce radio echoes of the same type and that they occur at the same height. The width δ H of the meteoric M region may also be calculated in this method, which presents accurate equations for the curved earth case as well as approximate equations for a flat earth case. The error involved in the latter approximation may be estimated in a practical set up. A 30 Mc. meteor radar may soon go into operation at this laboratory, when the above method will be used.
