Broadbanding of Waveguide Junction Circulators

ABSTRACT

Conventional waveguide junction circulators with cylindrical or prism shaped ferrite post have narrow bandwidth due to the imperfect matching conditions presented by the ferrite loaded junctions. It is shown in this paper that, by proper matching, circulator action is possible over a much wider frequency band. For broadband matching over a desired frequency band, dielectric loaded junction has been found to be quite useful. It has been possible to obtain typical bandwidths of the order of 2000 Mc/s. in a dielectric loaded X-band Y-junction circulator whose performance data is given below:

Frequency band for isolation greater than 20 db: 8-2-10-2 kMc.

Maximum isolation: 35 db.

Maximum insertion loss: 0·5 db.

Maximum VSWR: 1·2
