Averaged Field Strength of a Narrow Band Atmospheric

Pages 77-82 | Received 30 Jan 1970, Published online: 21 Aug 2015

Abstract

For certain types of assessment of the interfering effect of the burst form of atmospheric radio noise, the value of averaged field strength of a narrow band atmospheric corresponding to either the average or rms amplitude of a noise burst is necessary. This paper describes and discusses a method for measuring the required parameter. Assuming an exponential distribution of the amplitudes in a noise burst, the value of the parameter m in e−xm, which gives the experimentally observed ratio of peak to quasi-peak amplitudes, is evaluated. Using this value of m, the appropriate time constants of the output units for measuring the average and rms amplitudes of noise bursts are deduced. Experimentally evaluated conversion factor for averaged to quasi-peak field strengths are then deduced and compared with the theoretical expectations over a wide range of frequencies.
