Abstract

A smooth transfer of load to the standby power supply without transient effects when the mains supply fails and the retransfer of the load to the mains supply, when it reappears, is a problem in the design of a standby power supply system. In this paper, a scheme for overcoming this problem is discussed. In this scheme, the inverter supply is run on no load in synchronism with the mains supply. A logic circuit actuates a SPDT switch to transfer the power to or from the standby power supply without introducing harmful transient effects. The oscillograms depicting the performance of the unit are given and the experimental results are discussed.
