Abstract
An algorithm is described for the generation of binary aperiodic signals whose cross-correlation with a measured sequence of system input samples becomes progressively approximated to a specified format of either a step or an impulse function. An algorithm is also developed for the determination of the system's step or impulse response from the cross-correlation of the generated binary series with the measured sequence of system output samples. The algorithms are designed to be applicable for either on-line identification or post-measurement identification, as per convenience. The merits and limitations of the method are indicated.
