Abstract
Providing a safe, dependable and economical rail transport calls for extensive research work to adequately understand the interplay of various factors forming part of the track-vehicle system, an objective assessment of rail-vehicle interaction has assumed added importance for investigations connected with the introduction of higher train speeds up to 160 km/hr and more. As part of a research programme for high speed rail transport systems, extensive instrumentation is being installed in specially built rail cars, by Indian Railways, capable of simultaneous recording of analogue parameters representing displacements, accelerations, strains, pressures, temperatures and other variables of the track-vehicle system.
