Computation of the Capacity of a Burst Noise Binary Symmetric Channel

Abstract

A generalized procedure for computing the capacity of a burst noise channel, based on the available noise data is described. A Markov process consisting of good and bad states, corresponding to the absence and presence of noise bursts respectively, is used to represent the state of the channel. An explicit expression for the capacity is developed in terms of transition and error probabilities, as well as certain burst noise statistics.
