Abstract
A high frequency signal (dither) when injected at the input to a nonlinearity is found to linearise the characteristic about the origin. The linearised gain and the region of linearity is dependent on the dither amplitude. The dither signal, if properly chosen, can ensure any desired type of response, in addition to stabilizing the system. The altered characteristic for a few nonlinearities are derived and it is seen that the slope of the characteristic about the origin is the same for all these (irrespective of single valued or double valued) provided the dither amplitude is greater than a certain minimum. This result is made use of in predicting dither amplitude required to give a desired damping factor for a second order system.
