Abstract

The problem of approximating the higher-order system model, by a second-order model involving dead time from the knowledge of experimental step response, has been considered & a new graphical method has been suggested for the case when the system response is non-oscillatory but shows overshoot. For the case of oscillatory response, an analytical method has been suggested. This method proves very useful when the system response shows noticeable undershoot. For a class of oscillatory responses, in which undershoot is un-noticeable, (i) a criterion to distinguish them from the non-oscillatory response with overshoot and (ii) an approximate method for model simplification and identification are given.
