Abstract
Research and Development work on semiconductor devices was started in India in early sixties. The progress made in this area so far, however, has not been so impressive as in many other fields. In this article, the various factors that have limited the research and developmental activity in semiconductor research have been reviewed. It is observed that inadequate infrastructure, difficulties in procuring the materials and equipment, non-availability of properly trained technicians, lack of co-ordination between industries and R&D organizations and poor management of laboratories have been mainly responsible for the present state of affairs. Some suggestions for improvement upon the existing situation have been made.
