Effect of Bias Voltage on AM Noise of Gunn Oscillators

Pages 573-574 | Received 24 Sep 1976, Published online: 10 Jul 2015

Abstract

AM noise of an X-band waveguide cavity Gunn oscillator has been measured as a function of bias voltage at a frequency 30 MHz away from the carrier. There is a significant decrease in AM noise from–167dB/Hz to–178 dB/Hz, as the bias voltage is varied from 7.0 V to 14.0 V. The results indicate that the operating voltage should be carefully chosen to reduce the AM noise associated with Gunn oscillators.
