Abstract

The Finite-Element Method has been used to approximate a class of distributed systems by a lumped system. A linear shape function and one-dimensional element in space have been used in modelling the distributed system by an approximate equivalent lumped system. The step response of the equivalent lumped model has been found by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The results are compared with finite-difference solution as well as the exact solution. It is shown that the finite-element method can be used effectively in the modelling of a distributed system by a low-order lumped system.
