Abstract

This paper deals with a new adaptation algorithm of a quantizer which can be used in the adaptive delta modulation of speech signals. The quantizer adapts its step size from the knowledge of only the current channel symbol. The scheme does not require any memory for its implementation since the adaptation logic is only to decide whether the current channel symbol is 0 or 1. A comparative study has been made in this paper of the present work and the existing delta modulation methods using memory and it has also been shown how the present scheme efficiently eliminates the difficulties encountered by the existing methods, in case of very large slopes of input signals when two consecutive channel symbols are identical.
