Display Devices-A Review of Current Status and Future Trends

Abstract

A review of important display devices, such as, LEDs, LCDs, gas-discharge plasma displays, EL displays and CRTs from the point-of-view of their operating principles, characteristics, technology and limitations is attempted in this paper. Some useful applications of display devices and future trends in this field are also covered briefly.

B. S. Sonde

SONDE, B S (Prof.): Received the Degrees with high distinction from the University of Poona in 1958 and 1963. Received the Burmah-Shell Research Fellowship of the CSIR for PhD work. Joined the IISc, faculty in 1964 where he is now Professor and in-charge of the Centre for Electronics Design Technology established in cooperation with ETH, Switzerland. His fields of interest cover solid-state electronics in particular ICs and micropower electronics, display technology instrumentation and communication, in which he has several publications in leading scientific and technical journals and guided students for ME and PhD Degrees. He is author of a series of text books on Solid-State Electronic Instrumentation published by M/s Tata McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. Ltd. Author of a monograph on ‘System Design using Integrated Circuits.'

Prof. Sonde was a visiting Research Associate at Tohoku University, Japan during 1964, visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford University, USA in 1966 and visiting Professor at ETH, Zurich, Switzerland during 1976. He is a member of the IETE, IEEE (USA) and ISTE. He served as Honorary Secretary of the Bangalore Centre of the IETE during 1971–77 and is now the Chairman.
