Reliability Engineering

Abstract

“Reliability Engineering” has been discussed in various forums and need for its application in professional electronic and telecommunication equipments/stores brought out. Having functioned as the convener of the electronic sub-group on “Reliability Engineering in India” constituted by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for study of the state-of-art, the author highlights the state-of-art of Reliability Engineering as evidenced from a survey of electronic industries relating to consumer electronics in particular. The paper brings out that industry dealing with consumer electronics is yet to appreciate all the dimensions of the reliability problems. Philosophy of Reliability Engineering does not seem to have percolated to the various industrial levels. The article discusses the concepts of reliability, lacunae observed and recommends long-term and short-term solutions to promote the application of ‘Reliability Engineering’ on a firm basis in India, particularly, in consumer electronics field.

B. Bhasin

BHASIN, B (BRIG.): Born on 1925, May, 8th. Joined the Institution in 1960 as Associate Member and transferred as Member in 1968. Elected Fellow of IETE in 1977. Served the Institution as Chairman: of the Bangalore Local Centre and was elected to the Council in 1974. Corps of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers in 1949, and since then has held various assignments, the most important being Chief Inspector of Systems, Chief Inspector of Electronics and Controller of Inspection (Electronics) before taking up the present assignment of Director of Production and Inspection of Electronics and Chairman of the Technical Committee for Electronics and Electrical Stores, Ministry of Defence (DGI).

He is also the Chairman of the working group constituted by the Ministry of Defence to study the problem of rationalization/development of electronic measuring instruments by the three services for their present and future requirements.

Brig. Bhasin was awarded AVSM in 1977. Served the IETE Council during 1974–77.
