S. N. Mitra

MITRA, S N: MSc (Cal-et-Cantab): Joined the Institution as a Graduate member in 1953, became Associate member in 1955, Member in 1967 and was elected Fellow in 1972. Served the Institution in various capacities viz., Honorary Secretary (1960–62), Honorary Treasurer 1970–71, Vice-President 1966–67, 1971–72, President 1972–73 and a Member of the Council 1960–63, 1964–67, and since 1970 till to-date.

Joined AIR in 1949 and became the Head of its Research Department in 1961. In 1964, was deputed to the Ministry of Home Affairs as Director of Technical Labs. In 1973, he was with the Cabinet Secretariat as OSD, and finally returned back to the AIR as Addl. Chief Engineer in 1974, where he is now the Chief Engineer. In the AIR Research Department, he established a flourishing school of research on radiowave propagation. Quite a few members of the staff received doctorate degrees under his supervision.

He has participated in many national and international conferences and has travelled widely. He has been elected Chairman, Study Group X (Broadcasting) of CCIR, Chairman, Interim working party 10/2, of CCIR, Chairman working parties 6A and 7 of Asian Broadcasting Union, and Chairman of Expert Group on Satellites in Broadcasting of broadcasting organisations of non-aligned countries.

Mr Mitra is the recipient of the first IETE Award of 1959 which was later renamed as S. K. Mitra Memorial Award. He is one of the co-recipients of the IETE Silver Jubilee Award. He is FIETE, FNA, FRAS, FAFSc.
