Abstract

An opto-electronic tracking system has been developed to track the sun accurately at one place only. The system has three modes of operation viz scan, track and suspend modes. When the system is switched on, it assumes the scan state and a tube scans the sky for the sun. The direction of scanning is automatically reversed when the tube reaches one of the extremities. When the sun is sighted, the system switches on to the track state and tracks the sun thereafter. If the sun is not visible due to poor visibility conditions or at nights, the system switches on to suspend mode in which the power to the motor driving the tube is cut-off. The system consumes about 4 W of power and has a steady-state error of the order of a minute.
