Harsh Vardhan
Harsh Vardhan (Dr); BSc, MSc—57 yrs. In 1950 he joined the Defence Science Organisation as a JScO. Here he worked on Defence problems in the fields of applied and industrial physics. From here in 1953, he went to Cornell University. This uniquely equipped him for research and development in the fields of Applied Physics and Instrument Technology.
On return to the Defence Science Laboratory, Dr. Harsh Vardhan headed the Instrumentation Group in the Division of Applied Physics as Senior Scientific Officer Gd. I
For the High Speed Tracing Camera designed and made by him, he was awarded the highest prize of Rs. 5,000/- by the Invention Promotion Board in 1966. Awarded the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) award 1978 in recognition of meritorious contributions to instrument technology with particular reference to its interaction with industry.
In December 1962 he moved over to the Solid State Physics Laboratory. He was responsible for the development of several devices. He was promoted to the rank of Principal Scientific Officcr.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan joined Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in April 1970 as a Senior Professor and Head, Instrument Design Development Centre. The Centre grew fast under his care.
Dr. Harsh Vardhan has had several PhD research scholars under his guidence. Their projects were technologically oriented and culminated in the development of sophisticated techniques or instruments. Since February 1973 he is the Director of the CSIO, Chandigarh, a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India. He has travelled widely in India and abroad. He was deputy leader of the CSIR delegation to Cairo in 1974 and the technical member of NIL delegation to Europe and UK in 1977.
