Abstract

This paper describes the role of Microprocessor as a ‘Universal Processing Element’ and its impact as a cost effective replacement for the hard-wired digital logic in process control applications. The inherent features of the Microprocessor such as low price, small size, modularity and programming flexibility make it the most ideal component for use in a wide variety of process control systems. The advent of microprocessor has brought, for the first time, the small and medium scale industries within the fold of electronic process control which till now had remained a forbidden territory for these industries due to prohibitive costs of the ‘Computer’.

Microprocessor as a Programmable Controller, ‘dedicated processor’ and as an element in a distributed processing system has been discussed in detail. The modular approach both in hardware and software design has been stressed. However, the burden of tailoring the microprocessor to suit a particular application lies on the software. Some of the standard programming languages suitable for inhouse programming have also been discussed. Besides, some important microcomputer peripherals as the ‘system building blocks’ and the merits of digital transmission over analog transmission have been described.

Further, the need for standardization to help avoid dissipation of R & D efforts has been emphasized. In order to impart greater impetus to R & D in this area, the aspect of personnel training in this new discipline of electronic design which has a totally different conceptual base has also been discussed briefly.

S.S. Agarwal

Agarwal, S S: Joined C.S.I.O. in February 1962 and worked till October 1980 out of which for 10 years as Head of the Electronics Division. Since October 1980 on deputation to P.S.I.D.C. as Managing Director of the Electronic Systems Punjab Ltd., being set up to manufacture mini-computer/microprocessor based systems.

He has travelled abroad and specialised in digital circuit technology and its applications in electronic instruments and systems.

At C.S.I.O. he was heading Electronics Division since its inception, which is considered as one of the best centres for research, design, and development in the area of digital instruments and microprocessor based systems. During this period, the know-how of a number of digital instruments and systems was passed on to more than a dozen industries and most of these are in production.

At present at E.S.P.L. emphasis is on creating system engineering group and advance production facilities so as to make available indigenously sophisticated mini-computer/microprocessor based systems for various applications.
