Abstract
Today, many people can take their ability to make a phone call or receive a television broadcast by satellite for granted, but it does not happen by chance. It happens because of the coordinative work of the Geneva-based International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations agency responsible for telecommunications with 154 member countries. Many standards must be set and maintained, many international agreements reached for the world's telecommunications to function.
Telecommunications plays a vital role in all aspects of social and economic development. This is particularly true in the realm of health, the first concern of every fellow human being. To focus on this facet of telecommunications, the ITU, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, has designated as the theme for World Telecommunication Day 1981 (May 17) “Telecommunications and Health”.
