A Modified Algorithm for Determining Minimum and Free Distances of a Convolutional Code

Abstract

The article describes a modified implementation of Forney's algorithm for determining dminand dfree of a conventional code when a ready-made sequential decoder is not available. This has been obtained by eliminating certain complexities in the Fano algorithm and is based on successive estimation of the values. Results for binary and ternary rate—½ codes are presented.

Mittra, Prabhat K: Born in Sindri on 28th March, 1956. He obtained his B. Tech. Degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 1979. At present he is doing his M. Tech. in Electrical Engineering (Communication) at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. His interests are in the area of coding theory and its applications.
