Abstract

For recognition of a picture or a character with the help of a computer or in a microprocessor-based system, it has to be converted into a digitized form by means of a scanner. In this paper, a new type of scanner is described which utilizes Reticon RL 512 G solid-state scanner chip. This chip has 512 photodiodes with resolution of about 1 mil (25 microns). The array is kept vertical and is given horizontal movement by means of a stepper motor in such a way that a resolution of 1 mil is obtained in the horizontal direction. Thus two-dimensional scanning of the picture or character is obtained. The digitized informations are stored in RAM which can be the memory of a microprocessor-base d system. The paper describes the details of the electronic and electro-mechanical sub-system.
