Abstract

In this presentation, the advantages of digital radio over FDM/FM radio will be brought out. Various techniques for digitization of speech, and their relative merits will be briefly mentioned. The differences in the performance of digital transmissions over terrestial LOS links and satellite links will be brought out. The differences between synchronous and asynchronous transmissions will be mentioned. Some of the protocols used in synchronous transmissions will be touched upon. The relationship between the link throughput, channel delay, BER performance, speed of transmission and frame size will be brought out.

The advantages of networking of computers through digital links will be mentioned. The growth of the computer distributed systems will be briefly described.

Finally, the type of digital network for voice and data traffic being engineered by the RCPO for the ONGC will be briefly mentioned.
