Abstract

This paper describes the design and development of a dedicated electronic counter for frequency measurements of spectrographs displays. The main criterion of the design of counter was to make fast and accurate measurements. The frequency of the carrier oscillator of the spectrograph, which varies from 200–296 kHz has been used as the reference. The value obtained by subtracting base-line frequency from the oscillator output has been divided appropriately to get the desired value of the frequency on the display corresponding to the frequency range used for analysis. The frequency measured with this counter is independent of the width of base line, bandwidth of the analyzing filter, abnormal frequency variations and non-linearity of the frequency scale.

The counter has been used for accurate measurement of speech parameters like fundamental and formant frequencies of sounds.
