Abstract
Rectangular-wave modulated pulse lengths are expressed as a function of modulation index. The theoretical expressions are experimentally verified. A pulse-length modulation (PLM) system is obtained from rectangular-ware modulation (RWM). Signal-to-noise ratio expression of the rectangular-ware modulation yields the same result as Jelonek's formula for pulse-length modulation. Distortion is considered in RWM and PLM systems. Rectangular-ware modulation is compared with frequency modulation. It is concluded that rectangular-ware modulation is the same as closed-loop double-edge pulse-length modulation.
