Abstract
There has been a rapid growth of the power systems in the country leading to the establishment of regional and national power grids. The optimum utilization of power generation and distribution in such large networks requires centralised control and supervision. This in turn calls for a reliable and efficient communication system to transmit the large amount of data relating to power plants to the control centre and control signals from the control centre to the power stations. The paper describes various types of communication systems used for telemetering, telecontrol and supervision between load despatch centres, area control centres and major generating stations. Of these various types, PCM telemetry through power line carrier communication system, which provides economic and reliable communication to the users, appears best suited to Indian power system at present. The paper discusses in detail a PCM telemetry system with single error correcting code, which can provide high security for transmission of control signals even under noisy environments.
