Abstract

The complex task of efficient operation of a power system and load despatching has necessitated the use of telemetry and telecontrol systems for this purpose. Conventional telemetry systems based on digital cyclic techniques have limitations in terms of processing capacity, operational flexibility, diagnostics and data security. The advent of microprocessors have made the present day telemetry and telecontrol systems intelligent and sophisticated. Microprocessor based telemetry units can acquire data, process it and transmit to and fro from the load despatch centre with a high degree of security.

A typical telemetry and telecontrol system for load despatch application comprises computer based master control system at load despatch centre, a set of microprocessor based remote terminal units (RTU's) placed at various power generating stations/substations anda suitable communication link between master control system and remote units.

This paper brings out the functional requirements of a telemetry/telecontrol system for electrical load despatch application.
