Abstract
The paper discusses automatic transmission of surface meteorological data from remote field stations, via satellite to a central data receiving station. The common techniques presently used for this purpose are briefly considered and the underlying principles discussed. The paper also presents certain system design aspects of the automatic weather data collection platforms for use with the Geostationary and Earth Orbitting satellites, with particular reference to the DCP platforms designed and developed by the India Meteorological Department in collaboration with ISRO for use with SEO-II and INSAT-1A satellites.
