Abstract

The satellite earth station is characterized by its figure of merit G/T, a ratio of antenna gain to effective system noise temperature. The direct calculation of G/T does not model the actual operating conditions. Thus, a need for direct measurement arises. This paper brings out the choice of Moon for satellite earth station G/T measurement in Indian context. The experimental details and results for G/T of INSAT-1 satellite control earth station, using standard noise source Cassiopeia and Moon are given. A set of nomograms is also presented here for quick determination of G/ T using Moon as noise source.
