Abstract
An overview of Integrated Optics, which is the field for realising active and passive optical components in a micro-optic planar geometry, is presented. After a brief survey of the basic principles behind waveguidance in such structures, methods used to modulate the guided light by external means are discussed followed by some examples of certain specific applications that have already been achieved.
