A Novel Temperature Sensor Using Mercury Cladded Optical Fibres

Abstract

A novel fibre-optic temperature sensor is proposed utilising the high attenuation exhibited by metal-clad optical fibres. It can be made highly sensitive over a limited range of temperatures. Experimental results and implications on a prototype fabricated in the laboratory, which should find use in the actual design of the device for achieving a desired sensitivity/range of operation, are presented.
