B. Yegnanarayana

B. YEGNANARAYANA obtained BE, ME and Ph D degrees in Electrical Communication Engineering from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, India in 1964, 1966 and 1974 respectively.

From 1980, he has been a professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, India. He is also head of the department since 1985.

Prior to joining IIT Madras, he was a visiting Associate Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, during the period 1977–1980, where he was actively involved n speech recognition and signal processing research. He was with he I.I.Sc, Bangalore as a lecturer from 1966–1974 and as an Assistant Professor from 1974–1978. At IISc he was engaged in research and reaching in the areas of Acoustics, Electrical Communication, Signal recessing and Speech.

His current interests are in the areas of Man-Machine Communication, Artificial Intelligence, Speech and Image Signal Processing and Digital Signal Processing. He has published over 50 papers in several reviewed journals and Conference Proceedings.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, the Acoustical Society of India, Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, U.S.A., and Member of the Computer Society of India.

P.V.S. Rao

P.V.S. RAO was born in 1936. He has been actively involved in research in Computer Science since 1955. He was a member of the design team for TIFRAC, the first computer to be designed in India. He has also been member and leader of design teams for other computers built in India and U.S.A. He was in-charge of three major system design and implementation projects for computer based systems intended to meet important national needs. Design know-how for systems developed by his group has been transferred to public sector manufacturers of Electronics and have been successfully production is ed. These are in actual use at various locations. He has made contributions to the area of computer synthesis and recognition of human speech.

He is the author of over 35 original research papers in international journals. He has presented over 20 papers in international conferences. He has written popular articles, delivered radio talks and appeared on national and regional television programmers on scientific subjects. He has been research guide for a number of students for their M Sc, M Tech and Ph D degrees.

He has been and is Member and Chairman of official committees in the fields of education, computers and electronics. He was a Director of the Computer Maintenance Corporation and is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Computer Society of India., the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, the Acoustical Society of India and the Indian National Science Academy and Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, U.S.A.

He is a recipient of the Padma Shri (1987), the Om Prakash Bhasin Award (Electronics and Telecommunications 1987), the VASVIK 1987 award (Electrical and Electronics for 1985 & 1986 combined) and the Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (1976). He has been President of the Computer Society of India and the Bombay Association for Science Education. He was the Regional Distinguished Visitor of the IEEE for the year 1981–82. He has been elected as Chairman, IEEE India Council for 1987 and 1988. He is currently Professor and Head of the Computer Systems and Communications Group at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay.
