Abstract
This paper presents a state-of-art review of flexible automation and robotics in manufacturing. Stages of development of automation are presented and the role of robotics is discussed in the context of flexible automation. The review attempts to cover some general aspects related to the issue such as: basic concepts and trends in automation, flexible automation, industrial applications and role of robots in flexible automation followed by socio-economic impacts and management issues.
