Future of Satellite Communications Systems

Pages 4-12 | Published online: 02 Jun 2015

Abstract

Since its introduction only a quarter of century ago, satellite communications has become a part of our daily lives. It still has a large role to play in extending communication coverage across the world. Since the advent of optical fiber technology, however, some applications have been changing from satellite to optical fiber communications, and this causes some anxiety for the future of satellite communications. I think that one of the causes for this trend is that conventional satellite communications systems were too terrestrial network oriented. If there is to be a future for satellite communications systems, they must be based on a satellite oriented concept fully utilizing the features only satellites possess. The paper describe the present trends and the future of satellite communications from this standpoint.
