J Das, DSc, FIE(I), FNA, Between the years 1947–52, Prof Das served with M/S Tata Aircraft Ltd, Titaghur, and Radio Electric Centre, Jodhpur and in the Signal Corps of the Indian Army where he was incharge of Planning, Installation and Maintenance of Radio Stations, Exchanges, Carrier Terminals, and Telecom Workshops.

He joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1952, teaching at the Under-graduate and Post Graduate levels; and in a large measure, was responsible during this period for guiding research in Network Theory and Communication Systems. Spent a year at the University of Illinois, Urbana & also at MIT, Cambridge, USA in 1955–56. During 1970–72 he was Dy Director, CEERI Pilani. He rejoined the IIT, Kharagpur, and remained there till 1982. He then joined IIT Kanpur as a Visiting Professor. Had a short assignment in Sri Lanka as an UNDP Expert.

He received the S K Mitra Memorial Award in 1966 and other Awards from the IETE in 1971 and 1975. He was awarded the IETE Silver Jubliee Award in 1978. He also received the Institution of Engineers (I) Gold Medal in 1970 and 1972. Prof Das and his group have been awarded the NRDC National Award for 1976 and the VASVIK Award in 1977 for their work in Multi-channel ADM and in other aspects of Digital Communication.

He is a Distinguished Fellow of the IETE and also served IETE Council as a Member during 1975–78, 78–79 and 85–87 & Vice President during 1979–81 & 1981–84. He has been a driving force behind the establishment and running of the Correspondence Course of the IETE (now called as Centre for Distance Education) in its initial stages.

At present he is the Chairman, WECS of WEBEL group and a Director of MCS in Calcuatta.

Shankar Lall Maskara Graduated in Telecommunication Engineering from Bihar Institute of Technology, Sindri in 1963, obtained Master of Engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1966 and did his PhD at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in the year 1977. He served for one year on the faculty of B I T, Sindri. In 1966, joined, as a faculty member, in the department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, IIT, Kharagpur where he is now a Professor. Has been closely associated with many sponsored research projects. His current research interests include Spread Spectrum Techniques, Error Control Coding, Satellite Communication, Fibre Optic Communication and Telecommunication networks.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and also of the Institution of Engineers (I). He is a senior Member of the IEEE.
