Phase and Polarisation Insensitive Receivers in Coherent Optical Fibre Communication Systems

Abstract

Phase and polarisation diversity receivers have been proposed as an alternative of homodyne and heterodyne receivers in coherent optical fiber communication (COFC) systems. These receiver structures have been reviewed. Two new receiver structures have been analysed which are insensitive to phase and polarisation fluctuations of the received signal in addition to the local oscillator (LO) excess noise. First, analysis is carried out in ideal conditions. Then, resulting degradations due to nonideal conditions/components have been evaluated. ASK signalling scheme with nonsynchronous demodulation and DPSK signalling scheme have been considered.
