Eugenic Algorithm-based Search for Ternary Pulse Compression Sequences

Abstract

Superiority of ternary sequences for pulse compression over the binary sequences was established earlier. However, obtaining the former is a very difficult problem. Hence, one of the powerful global optimization techniques, viz genetic algorithm, has been modified to yield a eugenic algorithm. The latter has been successfully employed to obtain ternary sequences with better merit factors than have been achieved earlier and also to extend the search to greater lengths. Genetic algorithm is based on the analogy drawn from the Held of biological evolution. It is argued that analogies involve unwarranted transfer of context which can be judiciously avoided. Also, every optimization problem has some specificity which suggests reasonable heuristics which must be used to strengthen the genetic algorithm. The results obtained can be viewed as a success of this dual consideration.
