G Uma

Garimella Uma is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Hyderabad. Her research interests include distributed AI and real-time expert systems. She received her BE in electrical engineering from Vishveswarayya Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur, India in 1981, her MTech in computer science from Osmania University, India, in 1983, and her PhD in computer science from University of Hyderabad in 1992. She is a member of IEEE.

V V S Sarma

V V S Sarma was born in Vijayawada in 1944. He obtained his BSc from Andhra University in 1961. He obtained his engineering education from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore with a BE in 1964, ME in 1966 and PhD in 1970 all in electrical engineering. He has been a lecturer (1967–73), assistant professor (1973–80), associate professor (1980–83) and professor (1983-) at the same Institute and is presently associated with the Department of Computer Science and Automation. In addition, he was a visiting scientist at Carnegie Mellon University (summer 1979). Duke University (summers 1984, 1985) and a visiting professor at the Centre for Advanced Computer Studies, University of Southwestern Louisiana, (1984–86). Since April 1995, he has been a Scientist at Tata Research Development and Dsign Centre (Tata Consultancy services) at Pune.

Prof Sarma's research interests are in Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge-Based Systems, Decision Support Systems and Software Quality and Reliability. He guided 14 students for their PhD and 3 students for their MSc and has received research grants from DRDO, ARDB, DoE and Consultancy projects from several government agencies and industries.

Prof Sarma is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Academy of Engineering and IETE and a senior member of CSI and IEEE. He is on the editorial board of Sadhana and is an honorary editor for Artificial Intelligence area for IETE and is a co-author of a book “Reliability of Computer and Control Systems” (North Holland 1987) and co-editor of another book “Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems in Indian Context” (Tata McGraw-Hill, 1992). He has authored or co-authored over 70 papers in several Indian and international journals.
