Abstract

The effect of inclusion of different types of nonlinear amplifier (NLA) in the structure of a conventional charge pump phase locked loop (CP-PLL) has been studied. Through numerical simulation it has been shown that a particular class of NLA (cubic type nonlinearity) improves the acquisition performance of the CP-PLL whereas another class of NLA (limiter type nonlinearity) improves the tracking performance of the said system. The enhancement of acquisition performance of the NLA based CP-PLL has been examined by a prototype hardware experiment.
